Felix has no intention of showing Amelia real Tamrielic architecture in the Nexus. The main site he knows only exists because of certain rites he’d rather nobody find out about just yet. And the power that changed it into an echo of his world is not one a young girl should be encountering.

Even if she isn’t technically as young as she thinks.

That said, he can’t stop her finding him when he comes back, nor (try as he might) dampen her enthusiasm for seeing a ‘real’ piece of his realm . It’s looking as if he’ll have to resort to his backup plan: lead her on an unnecessarily long walk and lie like a Thalmor.

“We’re almost there,” he assures her, as they turn the last corner. “I promise.”

Amelia sighs heavily as she follows Felix around yet another "last corner" on their journey through the Nexus. He's been leading her around for over an hour now and if he thought he was going to be able to fool her into believing he was actually required to lead her a certain way, he's sorely mistaken.

"You are the worst liar I've met in a very long time, Felix." Still, she'll stop being petulant and pick her feet back up to follow him. Before she makes it more than a few feet, though, something down another alley catches her eye. It looks almost like a shadow moving against other shadows, but when she turns to look closer, it's gone. She stops in her tracks and turns toward the source of the movement, taking one cautious step toward the darkness of the alley ahead of her.

"Hey Felix... do you know what's down here?"

She nods slowly in response to his words, unable to pull her eyes away from the alley. "I'll be... right there..."

Only her feet don't seem to be listening. Amelia's certain she's telling them to trust and follow Felix, but instead they take her down the dark alley that seems to have no end. Honestly, she could find this place again later, so she has no reason to walk down it now.

It's as if someone, or perhaps something, is calling her to come - and she has no power against it.

The alley just seems to keep going as the gloom within grows - distance is flexible in the Nexus, of course, but surely the walls weren't that high? The dusty concrete pavement beneath Amelia's feet has given way to old, worn cobbles, and despite what one might expect of a murky alleyway, there's rather a lack of grime and litter on the ground. Some balls of discarded paper, a few leaves, the odd feather.

Briefly she might hear Felix yelling her name, but his voice is deadened by distance - or perhaps the shadows, so thick they almost seem like a mist in the air around her. Soon enough the sound is lost, and just when it seems the alley has no end... it forks.

Dead ahead of her is a wall, with the alleyway running off at crooked angles either side. It's no clearer what lies ahead... except, if she listens closely, Amelia will hear the trickle of water. It's hard to say which direction the noise comes from: it echoes against the stone walls too much. But there is a subtle draft in the air, a faint stirring of shadow from the left-hand path. If she looks carefully at the wall, there's a faint mark toward the left side: a circle chalked out within a triangle, both nearly rubbed out by time.

The darkness only heightens Amelia's senses, calling on her to listen, smell, and feel the changes around her as the alley gives way to something completely different. It's darker than a night with no moon, but she finds she doesn't mind. There's no distractions here like there are at home - there's only her, the alley, and whatever force is compelling her forward. Her footsteps are slow and steady as she puts together the subtle signs of where to go next.

It almost feels... wrong, the way she's being lead along without knowing by who (or what), but it's also exciting. A grin slowly spreads across her face and after taking a few steps past the marking on the walls, she breaks into a run. Why walk to get to where she's going when she can run?

The alley stretches on, but as if responding to her change of mood it jerks right, then left, and left again, twisting this way and that-

Until she turns a corner and instead of stone cobbles there's only inky blackness, a pooling shadow stretching out where the ground should be, just waiting for her.

How well can you fall, Amelia?

She's almost laughing from the excitement of this moment when her feet suddenly don't meet the ground on her next step. Not as graceful as her older self, she stumbles into an awkward roll and lets out a surprised yelp. It seems in her excitement she wasn't paying quite enough attention to her (lack of) surroundings.

Although she's ready for a quick, hard landing, the fact that she doesn't hit the ground after only a few seconds is a blessing. Amelia readies herself by keeping her knees bent, her weight low, and holding her weapons in a way that she won't destroy them or hurt herself when she lands. If she's done this right, she'll be able to hit the ground running again, though maybe after a slightly better tucked roll to regain her sense of balance.

The ground seems softer than she might expect as she rolls to her feet, even though a bare moment later her boots strike on flagstones again. She's in the central court of a market building, abandoned and silent, with doorways gaping beneath the tile-roofed portico that runs around it. Even her footfalls are strangely deadened in this empty stone space; it's still light enough to see, as if the moon is out, but if she looks up the sky is thickly clouded.

The only sound or movement comes from the trickling fountain at the far end of the court... and the woman in a rather ordinary grey dress sitting casually on its edge. She's offering a treat to the crow perched on her hand, and doesn't seem to take notice of Amelia at first.

The place Amelia finds herself in is strange and almost unnerving. So quiet, even when it shouldn't be. So bright, too. She takes slow stock of what's around her, making mental notes of all the details, before her eyes finally settle on the fountain - and the woman sitting on its edge. Amelia takes a few careful steps toward the woman, but stops a few feet back.

For a moment, she watches the woman in silence. Something seems different about her, but the young rogue feels like she's missing the frame of reference for determining what it is. Her lips draw into a thin line before she finally speaks.

"You called to me?"

Closer to the fountain, she'll be able to see that the water flowing from it is dark, almost inky. There's a circular pedestal above the spout as if for a statue, but it stands empty.

"Did I?" The woman's voice is low and soft; despite the question, it bears no hint of surprise at her visitor. She turns her head to regard Amelia, her face pale beneath the worn grey hood she wears. The bird on her hand swallows its morsel and cocks an eye at the girl itself, shuffles its wings with a rustle of feathers. "I offered an invitation. A door left ajar. But what brought you running down the path so eagerly, I wonder? What were you hoping to find?"

The woman has an unearthly air about her that makes Amelia shiver. She can't explain it, but she's certain the woman isn't what she appears to be.

"I'm... not sure." She frowns thoughtfully. That's not a question she was expecting. "It just felt right to come here. Or, rather, I felt like I couldn't turn away from the extended hand." Her feet shift uncomfortably beneath her as she worries about the consequences of a wrong answer.

Does her mouth curve upward slightly? Or is that a trick of the shadows? It's hard to see, without stepping closer. "You're young, I suppose. But it matters little whether you understand. What matters is that you've found your way here at last."

She crosses one leg over the other, bare feet never touching the floor as she faces the girl more fully. "Tell me, Amelia, are you old enough to bargain for what you truly desire? Are you wise enough to name it?"

At last? She was meant to be here? This woman, whoever she is, seems to know far more than she's letting on. It's unsettling, but Amelia finds herself oddly comforted by knowing she's where she's supposed to be, even if she doesn't understand how or why this woman knows all of this.

"If you know me, which you must if you know my name, you know of the things I do in the deep of the night that make me old enough to make my own decisions." A beat as she takes a few steps closer to the mysterious woman. They're small, cautious steps, but they're important ones. They show her resolve, her desire, to be closer to whatever it is that's being offered. "I know what it is I want from my world, but what do I do if that's already been accomplished? I don't know who I am without a goal to accomplish."

How different this teenage girl is from her older counterpart to be able to admit something like this so openly to a stranger.

"Is that all you want?" The woman shrugs a shoulder before lifting her pet to perch there. "A purpose? A new dream to chase? A hundred thousand worlds lie open to you: whatever cause your heart fancies, all the riches you could ever dream of... if you have the means to pursue them."

Despite the dissatisfaction her words might imply, her tone is more diffident, as if all this is merely a matter of idle curiosity. There is a test in this, that much is sure. But it's impossible to say what the right answer might be.

Assuming, of course, that there is one.

"But what good are riches and dreams with no one to share them with? What's the point of having the means if you've nothing and no one to use them on?" The words fall from her lips before she can think twice about what she's saying. "I've never cared about a dream for me - I've always wanted more for others. So why should I want for something more now?"

She pauses for a moment before adding, "Perhaps what I've done, either until my current age or the older one I apparently am truly supposed to be, is selfish, but I don't think it matters. I've accomplished what I set out to do and that alone should count for something, even if only to those I helped." Another pause and then she sighs heavily. If this is the test she thinks it is, it seems likely she's doing terribly.

"Honestly? ...I don't think I could be any other way."

The woman listens without a change in expression, merely a shrug of her shoulders when Amelia mentions being selfish as if she doesn't see the sin.

"If all you need is someone to serve, Amelia, the worlds are full of those who value a ruthless blade at their command." Her mouth curves very slightly. "But that isn't good enough, is it? It's not enough to be a hired thug, or an obedient soldier falling in line with your comrades. You say you need a purpose, but you've never been good at accepting another's leash."

That hits a little closer to home than Amelia was expecting. She looks at the woman with no small amount of shock on her face before forcing her expression into one of grim determination.

"If I'm going to drown myself in sin, I want to be the one making the decision as to when, how, and why it happens."

"Then perhaps we can reach an agreement after all." Her smile grows, just for a moment before it vanishes. She lifts her head to study Amelia with dark eyes. "I have use for an agent in this realm. Someone with the skill to protect my interests and carry out my will from the shadows. Someone like you, perhaps."

Amelia raises a skeptical eyebrow at the woman. "Did you want me or the older version of me? I feel like she might be more useful, given her experiences over mine."

If the woman thinks Amelia's deflecting a little to let things settle in her mind, she's not wrong. This isn't a job offer she should take lightly and even at her young age Amelia understands this.

"I would need to know who I'm working for and what they would have me do as well."

"I didn't make a distinction, Amelia. You're one and the same from my perspective. Or will be, soon enough. The details don't concern me." Far from minding the questions, she seems to expect them. But this is a woman who can sit on the edge of a fountain as if it were a throne - her authority doesn't seem easily threatened.

Amelia's about to start learning why.

"You already know me, little one." Her voice is low and sure. "The shadows that hide your steps; the lucky shot that fells your target. The night that shrouds your whispers. I am Nocturnal, and the darkness is mine to rule."

Nocturnal. That's not a name Amelia's heard before. Her lips draw into a thin line as she considers what the ruler of darkness sitting in front of her is saying.

"How can I know you if you're not from my world?" Maybe not the best thing to ask, but it seems an important question to have an answer to. "The people of my world don't believe in anything but what we can do with our own two hands."

Her lips curve into another smile, slight as it may be. "I am not chained to a single realm like so many gods. Where the shadows touch, so do I. Your people may believe what they wish: I don't require their love or their fear to permit me entrance."

Her head tilts slightly in question and a smirk tugs at one corner of her lips. "So the fact that my world doesn't have or believe in gods doesn't bother you? Because there are still shadows and people like me who wish to use them?"

Perhaps prodding Nocturnal like this really isn't a good idea, but it's definitely Amelia's style no matter what age she is.

Nocturnal tilts her head, giving Amelia a long dry look. Should that trouble her?

"What secret is better hidden than the one for which nobody searches?" Her expression is cool again as she continues, "I'm not here to ask for worship. I offer a simple contract. Service without shackles. Protect my sanctuary here, and I will grant you the power to do so. Both duty and power will be yours to fulfill - and use - as you see fit."

Amelia considers Nocturnal's words carefully. She feels like there's a lot of details missing here that could be important.

"What would this power entail?" A beat, and she frowns for a moment. "You ask that I stand vigil over this sanctuary. Would I be able to stand vigil over my sealed off world as well?"

It's not asked lightly and could very well make or break this deal for the rogue.

"...basically all the skills I have, only better?" Honestly it's not a bad thing, but she feels like she can already do all of those things. Well, except for the luck part.

She sighs softly and looks down at the ground in front of her feet. "I found out that the sorcerer who closed it for me isn't here anymore and I want some way to guarantee no one can get back to it." Not that she really understands the how or why, exactly, but after finding out that she can't go home anymore, Amelia wants to make sure that it stays the way the older version of herself wanted it to be.

"Much more than a mortal's skills could give you." Nocturnal stares at her coolly for a moment. "How easy it is to forget you know so little of these matters."

Still, the girl may question the reward but she does offer her own price to consider. Nocturnal tilts her head as she considers. "No-one at all? Are you so afraid of who might stumble across it?"

"Lacking ten years of memories and experience will do that to a person." Perhaps quipping at the one offering her all of these gifts is a bad idea, but who ever said Amelia was smart when it came to such things?

She nods slowly. "I am afraid." Her voice is soft, scared, but it carries across the short distance between them easily. "If I went to such lengths to see it closed, to keep myself trapped here, then it must be important to me." A beat as she sighs. "There are so many things here that could ruin my world - I've seen that already in the short time I've been here - and I would never forgive myself if I let any of that get through."

"Your world was a poor teacher." But the Prince brushes that aside. If she wants the gifts, she'll learn what they're truly worth. And she's bargaining for something very specific now.

"Interesting." Nocturnal lifts a hand, gestures. "I could place my shroud over your world, hiding it forever from anyone seeking to open a gate. Of course, the stronger my influence in the Nexus, the more powerful that protection would be."

Amelia brushes past the comment on her world to focus on the more important topic at hand. "So if I use the gifts you give me, do whatever tasks you ask to garner you influence in this place, you'll hide my world away? You'll make sure no one can ever find it again and everyone there will be safe?"

She takes a few steps closer, no longer timid in her actions.

"If so, then I'll do whatever you ask." She offers her hand to shake as a way to seal the agreement.

"The terms are acceptable." She doesn't smile, but there's a glint in her dark eyes as she reaches down into the water beside her.

"From now until the day you leave my service, your world shall remain hidden. Power for power. One safeguard for another." She draws forth a silver cup and holds it out to the girl's extended hand. "Drink deep, and it is done."

Should Amelia drink, the strange water is so light it almost seems to have no substance. There's only a faint velvety sensation, the cool taste of evening air flavored with whatever scents that brings to Amelia's mind.

There's no hesitation as Amelia takes one last step forward and carefully grabs the silver cup from Nocturnal. Even the older version of herself would hesitate, would take a moment to think about this, but she isn't. She won't. If her older self wanted her world sealed off and protected so damn badly that she trapped herself in the Nexus, then the younger self is going to finish it.

Raising the cup to her lips, she tilts her head back and drinks as much as she can before she feels the need to stop for a breath. The strange, almost air-like liquid inside tastes vaguely of sea salt, burning torches, and cobblestone streets, humid and heavy in the way it hangs on the edges of her perception. It almost tastes like the air of home. She quirks an eyebrow at the liquid as she lowers it from her face, but she doesn't ask.

The contract set, the rogue offers the cup back to Nocturnal. Her restless nature sets in and she can't help but ask, "Now that that's done, when do I start?"

The cup vanishes in a turn of the Prince's hands as she replies. "At once."

The murk seems to be withdrawing around them - or maybe Amelia's just seeing through it more clearly than before. Felix's voice can once again be heard calling her distantly, from behind.

"The little conjurer is on your trail," Nocturnal remarks idly, then: "See he doesn't follow where he hasn't been invited, would you?"

Some of the shadows on the wall behind Amelia clearly make up a doorway now, an entrance decorated with worn-down carvings that seems like it should always have jumped out at the eye. When she turns to look, however, there's a clap and flutter of many wings, the brush of swirling wind in her hair- and Nocturnal has gone.

The girl blinks several times as she tries to adjust her eyes to the sudden changes in her vision. Is it that things are changing? Or did Nocturnal's gifts kick in already? She's still trying to figure that out when the Prince mentions Felix and her attention is drawn back to the source of his voice.

"Right, I'll make sure he--"

Her hands fly to cover her face at the sudden wind around her. Her hair pin tinkles musically as the air swirls around her before falling silent when the wind fades. For a moment, Amelia gapes at the now empty space where Nocturnal had been before she can hear Felix's voice getting louder, which means he's getting closer and that's something she can't have. Turning on her heel quickly, she starts into a run toward the suddenly visible entrance.

"Felix?" she calls at the top of her lungs. "Just stay where you are. I'm coming to you!" Out through the doorway she runs at top speed, her ears focused on the sound of Felix's voice as she trusts this path will lead her back to him.

If Felix thinks he's the only one surprised by her sudden appearance behind him, then he's got another thing coming. She jumps back from the fading magic in his hands and then sighs heavily when she realizes he's asking where she came from.

"Honestly? I'm not really sure." Will a sheepish smile help her here? She certainly hopes so. "And I don't think I could find it again if I tried. I think..." A beat as she considers how much she should tell him about everything that just happened. Probably best not to mention Nocturnal yet? He should probably calm down a little before she does.

"I think I'm fine, though." She shrugs and checks over her belt and person to see if she still has everything she went into the strange alley on her. "I didn't lose anything and I'm not hurt at all, so that's good, right?"

"Pretty sure I have a better idea than you might think. Not sure if my older self told you this or not, but I've been out on my own and being every bit like an adult for well over a year now." If she sounds sulky and petulant about his accusations, it's because she is. She's not a little kid, Felix!

"Besides, so long as I'm all right, what does it matter where I was? It's not like you were going to take me to see anything interesting anyway. You've been leading me around and lying to me for hours." A beat, and she rolls her eyes. "Isn't that also something adults do all the time?"

She rolls her eyes at him. How typical a thing for an older sibling to say when they're annoyed by the younger. It's such an odd thing to be the petulant younger sibling for once, but it's hardly her fault that Felix is being so unreasonable here. "Who said I was sight-seeing? Perhaps I went somewhere for a purpose. Did you ever think of that?" She's pretty certain the answer to that is 'no.'

The movement of the familiar catches her attention and she takes an unconscious step back from it. "What is it looking for?" Will it know where she's been? Will it be able to tell Felix? She has no idea and now she's worried it might tell on her before she can come up with a good lie to feed Felix about this whole situation.

The suggestion of leaving is happily taken. "Fine. Lead the way. And don't lie to me about where we're going this time?"

...was she gone for longer than that? She's not sure, considering she hasn't looked at her pocket watch in a while, but she can hope she wasn't gone long enough for that lie to not work.

She holds back a sigh and nods as she falls in close behind him. "All right. I promise not to stray too far this time." It's honestly the best she can manage right now, given everything that's happened, and she hopes it'll be enough.
