Name: Felix Caelus
Nickname: None.
Age: About 27
Sex: Male
Race: Imperial
Sexual Orientation:Protagosexual Pansexual – Felix doesn’t have an orientation so much as he has preferences. He does have a bit of a weakness for Dunmer, but they tend to be more ambivalent about him.
Socioeconomic level as a child:Middle class
Socioeconomic level as an adult: Middle class, but with less money.
Birth date: 15th of Evening Star, two or three years post-Great War
Birth place: Bruma, in the dead of winter. His mother swore a lot.
Current residence: Until recently, split between a tent in a Skyrim legionary camp and the captain’s quarters of the USS Enterprise. Now… that’s a secret. ;)
Occupation: Conjurer, officially a soldier, sometime adventurer
Title/Rank: Apprentice Battlemage (equivalent to auxiliary rank)
Hobbies/Pastimes: Scheming, meeting new people, reading, gossiping, exploring, ruin-delving, scheming, joining cults, drinking, losing to Jim at chess, scheming, using his phone's camera to copy spells from Tamrielic libraries…
Talents/Skills/Powers: He’s been trained to handle a one-handed sword since he was young, and sometimes practices using two. He’s a naturally talented mage with the education to make use of it. He knows the most basic spells in the illusion and alteration schools; in destruction, frost was the only part that came naturally so it’s the only type of spell he really persevered with, and he’s actually pretty good at both alchemy and restoration. Why? Because those make you really popular. Stratos has taken advantage of that to push his training further in those schools.
His real talent, however – the one he pursues with a passion – is conjuration. Grasping the workings of summonings and bindings comes naturally to him, and he handles contact with an inhuman mind with relative ease. Calling up familiars and flame atronachs is easy for him, frost atronachs are getting easy, and he’s called a storm atronach once so far. Despite his talent, he’s hampered by a lack of formal training from a conjuration master, which has also limited his repertoire of summonings. He’s working on expanding his roster.
As for the half of the conjuration school that covers necromancy, he pretty much hasn’t touched that. He has the same talent for it, but necromancy is even more socially toxic than conjuration and he regards necromancers as gross, amateurish would-be despots who taint his beloved school by association. (Admittedly he treats rogue conjurers much the same way.) He’s been known to use his talents to infiltrate small covens and sabotage their rituals for his own amusement.
Basically necromancers smell and he hates them… until now.
Past History
Hometown: Bruma, in the Jerrall Mountains of Cyrodiil. Snowy, steep and most buildings are at least partly underground for warmth.
First Memory: Falling over in the snow and getting picked up by his uncle.
Most important childhood event that still affects him: Getting scolded in no uncertain terms for chatting to a Bosmer woman outside the chapel.
Why/How? Felix had wanted to impress the nice lady with how much of the sermon he understood and it was a shock to find his family weren’t so pleased. The contradiction between what he’d been taught – be polite to adults, always be good in chapel, good boys pay attention and learn about the gods – and the uncharacteristic alarm and (to him) anger from his uncle and brother was a lesson that stayed with him.
A little kid falling over himself to talk about religious matters, especially to a stranger and especially to a Bosmer, was a very dangerous thing in Bruma.
Other memories/events that still affects him and why/how: His mother’s death when he was about four or five, though he was too young for it to be as formative as it was for his brother. Learning about the Great War and how his various relatives died in it, seeding his cultural grudge against the Thalmor and giving him the context for everything he’d later observe about the society and politics around him. The first couple of times people he knew got arrested by/on instigation of the Thalmor: this was where the nebulous threat hanging over his head took a very concrete form for the first time.
Learning the story of Martin Septim and sneaking out of town to go climb around the ruins of Cloud Ruler Temple. When he was ten or so Martin was his hero and helped inspire his interest in conjuration. (Sorry Martin.) Attending his first summoning of a Greater Daedra (Azura, since she seemed the least threatening and a Dunmer boy he knew invited him). It was amazing: he was awed and ecstatic and confirmed for himself that speaking with a Prince was something he wanted to do again.
Past failures he would be embarrassed to have people know about and why: Once he and his friends woke something they didn’t expect to find in an old ruin. Three reckless young mages went in; two came scrambling out.
Then there’s the time he tried trading weapons with a minotaur. And the time he tried to commune mind-to-mind with a frost atronach. And the time he tried seducing the captain of the Leyawiin guard…
Biggest role model: Stratos, though it’s never said.
Why? After their mother’s death Stratos took very seriously the injunction to take care of his little brother. Their uncle raised them both, but the brothers were practically inseparable up until Stratos went to continue his studies with the Synod. Stratos was his guardian, his teacher, his partner-in-crime and often his playmate despite their ten-year age difference. Felix complains about him all the time but deep down he really wants them to have that relationship again, albeit on a more even footing.
And despite what he says, he will always look out for Stratos’s interests and usually go along with his plans, trusting that if Stratos is doing it it’s for the good of the Empire… and usually for the good of Felix.
Biggest challenge from childhood: Adapting to his family’s absences and the many prejudices and politics of Cyrodiil. As a child Felix was very much eager to please, wanted people to like him and got lonely easily… and he grew up in a place where guarding your tongue and being wary of who you trusted was a crucial survival skill. The idea that you could be nice to most people without trusting them, or that being friends with one group meant you had to disdain another, did not come naturally. He learned, though.
Physical Characteristics
Height: 5’10’’-ish. Average Imperial, anyway.
Weight: Variable – he has a healthy interest in all food and has filled out since the Legion started supplying him with square meals on a regular and reliable basis, but hard winter conditions, training and extended missions (aka having to do actual work) can pare that down in a hurry.
Posture: Casual, open, nonthreatening.
Build: He tends to lean muscle and doesn’t have his father’s broad bones. Imperials are rarely big guys. Tends to think of himself as more lightly-built than he is, since he lives around a lot of races that are bigger and tougher.
Skin: Pale for an Imperial, thanks to his Colovian (and a few Breton) ancestors.
Hair: Black, ear-length and often tousled.
Eyes: Dark brown
Describe their smile: Wry and rueful, quick and mischievous, conspiratorial smirking, bright and admiring, easy and charming, coolly amused… Felix has a smile for every occasion, and he makes them do a lot of work. By default his smile is an easy, amicable one that says he’s happy just to see you. It’s pretty convincing, because it’s rarely a lie.
Tattoos/Scars? He has one notable scar: a thin line that curls over the back of his right shoulder like a whip.
Glasses/Contacts? What is this heathen technology.
Left/Right handed? Right.
Distinguishing features: Why, if you interest him at all then he’s your very best friend. Or if he has nothing better to do than charm you.
Who does he take after; mother or father? Mother, in features and overall attitude. That said, he has his father’s complexion and non-confrontational temperament.
Style (Elegant, shabby, etc): He leans toward elegant but simple, usually meant to last. He’s only got so much money for clothes. He’s very sensitive to social gradations of dress, so he’ll try to tailor his costume to his company. And his goals.
How does s/he dress or what do they typically wear? These days he’s often in light Imperial Legion armor: layered hardened-leather armor trimmed with red cloth, ending in a battle-skirt that ends above his knees. He favors enchanted leather gloves but doesn’t use a helm, preferring the blue-green hood traditionally worn by Cyrodillic battlemages.
Other outfits one might find in their wardrobe: The set of personal and much more comfortable leather armor he used when adventuring before he was conscripted. He still breaks it out for his own escapades. Besides a couple of very nice Earth suits tailored to match the style of Jim’s era, he has a couple of outfits in Tamrielic style for casual wear. He likes lighter shades of blue.
Jewelry: He’ll use magical items given the opportunity, but for now he’s too poor to own anything of note and prefers carrying nothing that will a), make him a target or b), be confiscated in a search.
Other accessories: In the field, he usually has his satchel full of notes, potions and materials to make the same.
Weapons: Conjured blades. He’s very fast on the draw with them and will soon figure out how to include the automatic soul-trapping and daedra-banishing/undead-repelling effects…
This one could go in either the weapons or outfits category, but he still has what I nickname the ‘unthinking cap’, a hood made from the shadow of the Cowl of Nocturnal. It has the effect of dulling the wearer’s perceptions of truth around them and making lies or illusions more convincing. Felix hasn’t figured out exactly how it works but realizes it could help buffer mortal minds against the overwhelming cosmic revelations one might encounter in the Oblivion realms. Or if he ever wanders into a Lovecraftian universe.
Health: Pretty good. He’s his own first target for healing spells.
Hygiene: As good as possible considering he spends so much time in fantasy Medieval Rome. He likes his baths, and he really likes that his boyfriend’s quarters have a functional bathroom attached.
Physical Flaws: No caffeine tolerance. Jim got him a couple coffees once and he’s practically sworn off the stuff since. Besides which, he finds it philosophically disagreeable. (Alcohol, on the other hand, is the foundation of civilized discourse, without which society could not function.)
Physical Qualities: He’s reasonably attractive and in no way above exploiting this.
